What You NEED to Know, BEFORE Hiring A Designer

January 16, 2017

For many, I am sure hiring a designer can be difficult, but the question is, what do you actually need before hiring your graphic and/or web designer? In this blog, i’ll address a few things you need to know before diving head first into this thing.

Whether starting a blog, e-commerce website, event or just simply needing a logo, there are a few things you need to have before getting started.

The first thing you need to know before contacting a designer to assist you on your journey is your vision for the project. What are your goals for the final project? Who are you trying to reach? This is critical as it will help the designer get a feel for the direction you are looking to grow your project. Without knowing these things off hand, it could lead to a lengthy process because you have no clear idea of what you want. In return, you’ll find yourself going back and forth with your designer a lot.

Next, once you have a vision, you then need content if you are looking to have something designed for an event, business launch, website and so forth. For events, you need to know the general information of who, what, when and where along with any images you would like included.

For websites, it goes a bit more in depth. MAJORITY OF DESIGNERS DO NOT PROVIDE CONTENT. This is VERY important to know. You will have to have all of your blogs in order, any text you’d like to see on your e-commerce website, including but not limited to, product descriptions and policies, inventory of products along with images you would like to see throughout the site. Without these items, it’s really hard to proceed with your design in a timely fashion. In addition, as a designer, we are unable to give you a proof without these things. Sure, we could use dummy content, however, once the content you are actually using is input, it makes all the difference.

Last, but certainly not least, prior to hiring a designer you need to have a budget and completion date in mind. Graphic design can start as low as $60 an hour and as high as $150 an hour all based on what you are getting. Web Design on average is going to start at $1000 for a beginner level website. Be realistic when setting your budget and do your research. A lot of the time, people tend to aim low and end up getting a completed project that’s a bit less than appealing and have to hire another designer to clean up the situation, which in return costs you more than expected. Go for quality, especially for something that’s going to represent you and leave a first impression on others.

Feel free to leave any questions below on getting started with a web / graphic designer!
